Packing Fragile Items for a Safer Move

Fragile packing is a system: choose a suitable container, protect each surface, prevent internal movement, close the box without pressure and identify the contents before loading. Rushing one step can undermine all the others.

Choose the right box and materials

Use a sturdy box that is only moderately larger than the protected item. Reinforce the base and avoid a damaged container that has lost its shape or strength.

Use clean protective wrap, paper or cushioning appropriate to the item. Dense objects belong in smaller boxes so the finished container remains manageable.

Protect pieces individually

Wrap separate pieces instead of letting hard surfaces touch. Give extra attention to handles, rims, corners and projecting parts that can take pressure.

Do not place tape directly on delicate finishes. Where an item can be disassembled safely, keep labelled hardware in a secure bag linked to the correct piece.

Control movement inside the box

Create a cushioned base, place the protected item away from the box walls and fill empty spaces so the contents do not shift. The aim is support, not compression.

Before closing, move the box gently. If the contents shift, add appropriate support rather than forcing the flaps down.

Label and disclose

Mark the destination room, general contents and any relevant orientation. Clear labelling helps unloading and keeps fragile boxes out of the wrong stack.

Tell the moving team about large glass, artwork, antiques, instruments or unusually shaped pieces during the quote stage. Some items require a separate review or specialist service.

Prepare personal and restricted items separately

Keep identification, keys, essential medication, jewellery and irreplaceable small valuables under personal control.

Do not pack hazardous materials or any item the mover has not accepted. Ask before packing if the handling status of a material or object is unclear.
